In the past, men and
women who were leaving active duty military service have been
encouraged to have their separation papers ( DD 214 form) recorded
with the Register of Deeds at the courthouse either at their home
of record, or near where they live.
Recent reports by the DOD and TAMP erroneously tell
veterans that their dd 214's are not secure in the county courthouse.
This information is not exactly true. Your dd214 may be a public
record in some states (such as Arizona and Indiana), but other
states, such as Wisconsin, Michigan, Nebraska and North Dakota
treat the dd214 as a confidential document, and not accessible
to anyone without your written consent.
If you are a recently discharged or are about to be
separated for what ever reason, please do not hesitate to bring
your dd214 to this office ( or any County Veterans Service Office
in Wisconsin). While you're here, we'll discuss your entitlement
to veterans benefits, both state and federal. For your information,
if you scroll to the bottom this Veterans Service Office web
page, you'll find both federal and state VA web sites, as well
other sites that may be of interest to you.
In war or in peace, a grateful nation truly appreciates
your commitment to the principles of freedom, justice and democracy.
