Fourteen miles of the Sheboygan River were designated as a federal Superfund hazardous waste site in 1986. There are numerous environmental and public health implications due to the presence of contaminants in the sediments of the River, primarily polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB’s). The links below will provide a wealth of additional information on this important project.

Fish Consumption Advisories have been issued since 1987 for the Sheboygan River to protect human health. Information on the fish consumption advisories can be found at - http://dnr.wi.gov/fish/consumption/ , and http://dhs.wisconsin.gov/eh/Fish/FishFS/PCBfish.pdf
The Record of Decision is the legal document that governs the activities to be conducted in the Sheboygan River clean up project. The Record of Decision was issued on May 12, 2000. This assigns obligations and responsibilities and sets parameters for the work to be conducted - http://www.epa.gov/superfund/sites/rods/fulltext/r0500030.pdf
Clean up actions on the Sheboygan River began in 2004. The first Five Year Review Report by the Environmental Protection Agency provides an excellent history of the site and describes clean up work conducted up to 2009 - http://www.epa.gov/superfund/sites/fiveyear/f2009050002972.pdf
More removal and proper disposal of contaminated sediments is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2010, and may progress during the following two years.
Upon successful completion of this project, the environmental and public health threats will be reduced and eventually eliminated, and major economic development associated with the Sheboygan River can occur.
