Adult Protective Services (APS) is a state-mandated program that helps to ensure the safety of county’s vulnerable residents. Its function is to address situations of potential abuse and neglect for seniors and adults-at-risk, in situations where the person may not be able to look after their own safety because of the person’s health condition or disability.
When a referral is received, the APS worker completes an investigation which may include: interviews (both face-to-face and over the telephone) with the senior or adult-at-risk and others involved in the situation, review of reports by various other professionals who may be involved and review of any previous interventions recorded by Sheboygan County Health and Human Services Department. After the initial investigation, the APS worker may provide assistance by providing short-term case management to determine what response is needed, if any. Services that can be arranged may include obtaining a guardian of person and/or estate, protective placement, or referrals to other community resources as needed.
